Joint Sector Position Paper: Call for Successor to Europe’s Rail in Next EU Research Programme

On 30 April, UIP, together with other leading rail organisations, called on the European Institutions to ensure a successor to Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking, as part of the next European Research Framework Programme.

It is proposed by the signatories of the call to focus on developing cutting-edge technologies across the rail sector to enhance European rail systems and make rail more competitive. To this end, key technologies, such as ERTMS, FRMCS and DAC will play a vital role in advancing cross-border interoperability and connectivity, pushing the shift from road to rail.

The rail sector’s call stresses the importance of advanced technologies and innovation in order to achieve the Single European Rail Area (SERA) and to complete the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). These technologies, also mentioned in the Draghi Report on EU Competitiveness, are crucial to making the EU economy more productive and competitive.

This position paper outlines the collective sector’s vision for a digital, automated, connected and customer-centric railway system, which will in turn bring multiple benefits to European logistics and the economy as a whole.
