The updated GCU: important clarifications & joint webinar
The updates to the GCU entered into force on 1 January 2026 and were the fruit of collaborative efforts over more than 3 years.

The focus was on providing more clarity and eliminating uncertainties for the 800 signatories of the GCU.

The 2026 version of the GCU is supposed to be understood as a specific empowerment for RUs, while maintaining the Wagon Keeper’s fundamental responsibilities. The amendments thus balance duties fairly between both parties through clearer interfaces and information exchanges.

With this clearer, more robust, transparent framework that aligns perfectly with EU safety laws, we have a harmonized rule book that favours operational efficiency and competitiveness for rail freight.

On 2 February 2026, almost 700 industry colleagues joined online for a webinar deep dive and Q&A hosted by UIP, UIC and ERFA.

The experts explained how alignment and transparency takes center stage in the ‘new’ GCU 2026:

  • Clearer Roles: Wagon keepers and Railway Undertakings now have a sharper definition of their responsibilities.
  • Safety First: “Release to Service” and “Return to Operation” protocols ensure that maintenance standards aren’t just met—they’re verified.
  • More Digital: Using the GCU Broker Platform to swap data, not paperwork.
