Today, UIP has joined Rail Freight Forward and 18 other international and national rail and intermodal stakeholders in a statement expressing serious concerns about the proposed revision of the European rules applicable to the weights and dimensions of road vehicles.
The text currently on the table poses important challenges to society, going beyond the logistics sector. We strongly consider that the introduction of longer and heavier road vehicles would harm the competitiveness of the European intermodal freight transport system and undermine the investments made in rail infrastructure. Furthermore, it could also slow down road safety efforts and increase pollutant emissions, not letting Europe reach its climate and air quality goals.
This statement’s objective is to urge the EU Commission to carefully examine and reassess the impact of its proposals before it is too late. An efficient European multimodal transport framework, aligning with safety and sustainability objectives, must remain the top priority and can still be achieved.
