The three EU Institutions (Commission, Parliament, Council) are in trilogue negotiations on the railway infrastructure capacity regulation.
UIP joined 11 other industry associations in an open letter to urge the EU institutions to commit to an ambitious move towards the Single European Railway Area in the finalisation of the regulation.
Managing railway infrastructure capacity well and with an international mindset will not only increase the overall capacity available on the European network, but will, crucially, improve the quality and quantity of train paths available to rail freight, thereby making them more attractive to end users and contributing towards better functioning European supply chains.
In practice this calls for laying down rules to enhance international coordination and to move away from the status quo which has been complicating rail freight’s ability to offer competitive cross-border services due to network fragmentation for far too long.
