As the discussions on MFF/CEF 2028-2034 are starting, the rail sector – UIP together with AERRL, CER, EIM, UITP, and UNIFE – calls for a continuation of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport.
A centralised EU programme for transport and especially, rail freight, is essential to ensure efficient coordination, prioritisation, and the successful execution of rail projects in Europe. The sector also calls for an adequate CEF transport budget, in order to complete the TEN-T network within the set deadlines and to deliver infrastructure upgrades on Europe’s rail system.
As regards the priorities, UIP highlights the deployment of DAC as a game-changing technology for freight wagons and a key enabler for digitalisation and automation of rail freight operations. DAC has also the potential to unlock more infrastructure capacity and allow rail freight operators to meet the reliability demands of customers.
Regarding research and innovation, the rail sector also advocates for the continuation of Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking, which has proven to be an effective R&I instrument. Building on its current deliverables, the successor programme should accelerate a coordinated deployment of key technologies across Europe.
