Sector states opinion in discussion about the future of EVN
UIP together with AERRL, ALLRAIL, CER, ERFA, UIC, UIRR and UNIFE addressed a common sector position to the European Commission, European Union Agency for Railway and RISC members about the use of the current European Vehicle Number (EVN) and a vision of its evolution.

The rail sector does not agree with a proposed idea of changing the EVN to a random and permanent identifier which is automatically generated. The EVN with its EVN structure today -as a speaking number- is from the railway sector’s point of view an important advantage and not a disadvantage.

A non-speaking (random) EVN as a unique identifier would fail to ensure the traceability of the vehicle from its placing on the market till its scrapping as its administrative and technical characteristics can evolve during its lifecycle.

Please find the detailed reasoning of the sector’s objection in the document to the right of the page.
