UIP 35th Management Report 1984
The positive signs observed throughout the year 1983 of an improvement of the European economy have strengthened in 1984. We cannot yet speak of a general recovery, affecting key economic sectors. Important and lasting recession has left strong traces. Now, a change of trend is felt that – hopefully – will stabilize and may even grow.
In 1984, in the transport sector, the average goods traffic in the Western European railway networks was no longer in decline, for the first time since a long time. For private wagons, recovery has been weak compared to UIC wagons. The situation was also different from country to country, and the upward trend was only partial. Overall, the current capacities of private wagons are not yet fully used, except for certain sectors, particularly towards the end of 1984, with the beginning of winter. It is not about talk of a full use of all the private wagons, far from it. So far, we cannot yet see impulse for more significant new investment.
The 1984 Management Report is available in both French and German.
