UIP 30th Management Report 1979

In countries where UIP members are present, economic activity, by and large, which had marked an improvement in the second half of 1978, is remained relatively stable until the end of the year 1979. This tendency seems to continue at the beginning of 1980, but we can expect a slowdown this year.

Freight Railway traffic marked a general progression but with some differences according to the networks. It was everywhere growing, rather low for the BR, normal for the FS and SNCF, more accentuated for the SBB, DB, NS and SNCB.

For traffic operated by private wagons, movements were, as always, contrasting from one sector to another. But, in general, these movements have shown an interesting progression. 1979 therefore marked some significant improvement. This caused, in some areas, a tension between supply and demand which has resulted in a certain resurgence in the construction of new equipment.
