JSG sector communication on JNS ‘Broken Wheels’ European safety measures expected for end of 2025

UIP and the sector associations CER, ERFA, UIC, UNIFE and UIRR have published a joint communication in their capacity as members of the JSG group on the updated harmonised European safety measures that are being developed by the JNS ‘Broken Wheels’.

In this letter the JSG as part of the JNS underlines the methodical and collaborative process dedicated to addressing safety concerns from a holistic perspective and outlines the chronological steps taken in response to the Gotthard Base Tunnel train derailment on 10 August 2023. This proves that the EU framework is functional and that collaboration has already produced tangible outcomes.

The JNS is currently hard at work to finalise updated European safety measures by the end of 2025.

The implementatation of JNS measures by all actors is critical for the continued improvement of rail freight safety while maintaining Europe’s competitiveness and the seamless movement of goods.
