Europe moves toward new unified freight wagon safety standards – National Authorities must align

The rail associations of the Joint Sector Group, which is integral to the JNS, have published this sector communication to inform on the status and progress of the work of the JNS task force ‘Accident in the Gotthard base tunnel with focus on broken wheels’. The updated safety measures in response to the Gotthard Base Tunnel train derailment are being finalised and expected by the end of 2025.

UIP has issued a press statement to underscore the importance of the coordinated European response that results from the JNS process that addresses safety issues holistically and scientifically. It echoes the JNS’ conviction that harmonised European solutions are the most effective way to ensure safety, interoperability, and reliability in cross-border freight transport without creating new risks or barriers. National Authorities must align.
