RailTarget – UIP’s outlook for 2026

In an interview with the international rail magazine ‘RailTarget’, Secretary General Gilles Peterhans dives into an outlook for rail freight in 2026, a year that demands serious action instead of more rhetorics.

He outlines how the sector has been held back for too long by a fragmented patchwork of nationally-managed networks and a lack of real international coordination. What is needed now and what UIP is pushing for more than ever is to finally get to a rail freight system that truly reinforces the Single Market and supports the EU’s climate and competitiveness agenda.

This requires adequate infrastructure capacity and enforcing cross-border coordination, adhering to the same set of mutually agreed safety standards. It also requires an acceleration in all things digital and automation; significant, sustained and targeted investments; a stronger EU Agency for Railways; seamless data exchanges.
