UIP 31st Management Report 1980

The year 1980 was marked by a widespread economic recession, especially in industry and trade.

Economists and specialty services expect an extension of the crisis for several years, with a stronger unemployment.

This economic downturn is not translated by an equally brutal fall of the railway freight traffic.

There are in fact clear variations:

  • in time: the activity was stable in the first half of the year but declined throughout the second.
  • depending on the different goods transported: while the crisis in the heavy industry resulted in a significant decline in the transport of ore, as well as of the products of steel, engineering, chemical and petroleum industries, there was an increase in the transport of cereals, food products, wood and building materials;
  • depending on the country: affected by specific domestic phenomena in addition to the international situation

The 1980 Management Report is available in both French and German.
