UIP 39th Management Report 1988

Last year’s economic expansion exceeded forecasts and affected almost all sectors of industry. On the whole, the more transport-intensive sectors benefited directly from this positive development. The chemical industry has maintained a high level of activity.

The prospect of the liberalisation gives greater importance to the European transport market. The volume of transport will therefore increase especially on international relations deserving the economic centres of the EC countries as well as of Switzerland, Austria and Scandinavia. As transit countries, Switzerland and Austria have a particular role to play. The distance of international relations traffic – in general longer than that of national relations – represents a chance for the railway in this perspective of the development of the European internal market. One should seize the opportunity. This is why the European railways are invited to develop common strategies for the international relations in order to maintain their market share and, if possible, to extend them.

The 1988 Management Report is available in both French and German.
